If you are a regular reader round these parts you may have noticed that
this week and the last two weeks posts have been “Wishlist Purchases” aka haul
posts. I promise this is the last of them for a while! I have definitely went a
bit mad on the spending over the last few months and with a few new releases or
launches of brands that have been previously been unavailable in the UK, I have
treated myself big time!
I told myself when I first started seeing the Urban Decay Naked Ultimate Basics palette popping up on Instagram before its release that I didn’t
need it, that I could wait to Christmas etc. However, when an email telling me
I had £10 worth of Beauty Club rewards to spend at Debenhams, I took it as a
sign! (Side note – most of the £10 probably came from my Kat Von D splurge!).
Anyway, onto the palette and I have to say I was slightly disappointed
when I first opened it. Don’t get me wrong, the outer packaging is lovely and I
really like the change to a square palette instead of a rectangular one but it
feels and looks quite cheap and plastic-y, something you can see especially in
between the shadows. I feel like this is going to be quite a mixed review
already because although I do really like the palette overall, some things,
like shadow quality, fall a little short for me and I’m very glad I got this
for £28.50 instead of its usual £38.50.
The Naked Ultimate Basics has a really nice mix of twelve eyeshadows
with cool and warm tones that’s bound to keep everyone happy and a double sided
mini brush. I've only used the brush once and I don’t really rate it, I never
use shader brushes and it’s tightly packed and feels quite hard. The opposite side
is fluffier but is quite stiff and I prefer something bendier to apply shadow
all over the lid so will probably only get a bit of use out of this as an inner
eye highlight brush.
I’m never happy with my swatch photos but I think you can see what I mean
about difference in quality between some of the shades. All swatches are done
on my arm with my finger and I don’t use primer for them.
Swatches l-r: Blow, Nudie, Commando, Tempted, Instinct, Lethal |
Blow is the only shade that is not completely matte, it has a very soft
sheen and I’ve been loving it as a subtle inner eye highlight. It’s very
similar to Skimp from the Naked Basics 2 palette.
Lethal hasn’t swatched well either but I’ve been using it to darken my
outer corner with Instinct all over the lid and it applies beautifully and is a
nice change from my usually taupey browns with its hint of burgundy (it is very
similar to Punk from the UDxGwen palette)!
My most reached for shades along with these have been Tempted, Lockout
and Faith!
Swatches l-r: Pre-Game, Extra Bitter, Faith, Lockout, Magnet, Blackjack |
Pre-Game is a shade I probably wouldn’t reach for as an eyeshadow but
like Foxy from the Naked Basics 1, multitasks as an under eye setting powder!
I think Extra Bitter has probably swatched the best out of all the
shades – it definitely looks the most pigmented but unfortunately this just isn’t
a shade I would go for.
Blackjack looks awful in the swatch, when you are used to the likes of
Blackout from the UDxGwen Stefani palette it falls a little short. I use black
eyeshadow every day to line my upper lid and add a little definition and use
the shadow wet so it does perform a lot better this way.
Overall, I have been enjoying this palette but I definitely do not
think it’s a necessity if you already have any of the previous Naked Basics palettes
and I find that both of those palettes shadows are more consistent. I will be
getting my use out of this palette but I’m glad I didn’t pay full price because
I think overall I would have been more disappointed with it.
What do you think of this palette? Did you buy it?

Oh, I put this palette in my virtual basket a few times and then changed my mind quite a few times in last few weeks, especially when I saw some swatches on instagram, but now I am happy that you made this post with swatches without a primer or a wet brush, as I feel like I have palettes with similar colour and the performance is also not that exceptional... On the other hand I ordered Tartelette in Bloom from QVC, so I am not sure whether I really saved😇
ReplyDeleteHaha! Oh that palette looks amazing! I've had it on a wishlist before too! Xx
DeleteI really like the look of this UD palette, even though I really don't need any more haha
ReplyDeletehttp://claresloves.blogspot.com/
Haha if you have any of the basics palettes I dont think you need it! Xx
DeleteThat looks alike a great palatte.
ReplyDeleteI found the formula wasn't as great as the other basics palettes I have xx
DeleteThe original Naked palette is probably one of the my favourites and I use it every day. Great honest review x
ReplyDeletefranklyflawless.com
Thank you! Naked Basics 2 will always be my favourite! Xx
DeleteI want that Ultimate Basics Palette! Also, I'm having a Fresh Sugar Rose Lip Treatment giveaway and will have a new giveaway each week with products from UD, Too Faced, Fresh, Hourglass and more. You should come check it out!

Some of the shades formulas are hit and miss but it is a lovely palette! Xx
DeleteI love that you call your haul posts wishlist purchases...sounds so much better and I'm sure it doesn't lead to half as much guilt...lol! Its a shame about the cheap feeling packaging...some of the shades look gorgeous though! xxx
ReplyDeleteSal | UmmBaby Beauty
Haha it saves on no guilt unfortunately! Some of them really are! Xx
DeleteI wasn't really tempted by this palette as I just love my Zoeva and MUG matte eyeshadows so I'm kind of glad I didn't splurge on it as it does sound and look not the most impressive for the price. x
ReplyDeleteMummy’s Beauty Corner
Yep definitely agree, I would have been so much more dissappointed if I'd spent the full amount! Xx
Deletei just saw this post on my Instagram and I made a mental note to read it, and then I just so happened to come across this post! It's fate! I have this palette on my wishlist as well, it's so so beautiful. Might have to ask for it for Christmas.
ReplyDeleteTia | The 10am Blog
I found the formula a bit hit and miss but it's still a pretty palette! Xx
DeleteThis and ABH Modern Renaissance palettes are the last two eyeshadow palettes that I plan to purchase this year. Or at least that's what i tell myself now. I don't have any Naked Basic palette so I definitely need this!
ReplyDeleteShireen | Reflection of Sanity
I found some of the shades to be a bit hit and miss formula wise but everyone else seems to be raving about it! Xx
DeleteI had contemplated purchasing this palette but I'm glad I passed. Even though it didn't knock it out of the park, at least there are still some good shades :D
ReplyDeleteMili | Sharmtoaster
Totally agree! And I think a lot of the shades are dupable! Xx
DeleteI skipped out on this palette. I do love my Zoeva palette. It's a shame the quality of the packaging isn't on par with most of their other products.
ReplyDeleteBeautetude
I agree! Xx
DeleteThanks for the honest review! I'm glad I didn't go for this since I probably would have been a bit disappointed too. I expect a lot out of an UD palette!
ReplyDeleteShe Likes to Shop
Me too and I was just expecting more with this one! Glad I used my points to get some money off it! Xx
DeleteI love how shades look but shame that quality is not so great. I guess there are many other better palettes than UD !

I think so too! Xx
DeleteI was very tempted to buy this when it was released but told myself not to because I have enough mate shadows & I'm glad I didn't because there is nothing unique in there and the pigmentation seems hit & miss! xx
ReplyDeleteBeautylymin| Kat Von D Contour Palette & brush Giveaway
It definitely is! I keep reading rave reviews though so I think I'm the only one who is disappointed! Xx
DeleteI was expecting more from this palette, it is shame to hear that it is not really worth £38.50. I wish they had spent more time on the eyeshadows rather than the shiny gold packaging :)
ReplyDeleteEla BellaWorld
Me too! Formula is a bit hit and miss! Xx
DeleteI love the colors. Seem perfect for Fall. No kidding I am a dummy when it comes to make up!
ReplyDeleteDora www.BangsBang.com
I definitely think their are better matte palettes! Xx
Deleteaw that sucks. Extra Bitter is the only shade I would purchase separately! :p
ReplyDeletePam xo/ Pam Scalfi♥
I think it really shows up the difference in quality because it is crazy pigmented! Xx
DeleteEveryone raves about this palette and I'm not an eyeshadow gal otherwise this would've been brought by now, but it sure does look great. The shade range is amazing.
ReplyDeleteHave a lovely week ;)
tipscapsule.blogspot.com
Some shades definitely have a better formulation that others! Xx
DeleteI was looking at this palette the other day but could not really justify spending more money this month. The shade range looks great but it is a shame that the packaging is a bit cheap.
ReplyDeletewww.mydailywear.co.uk
Totally agree, I think there are better quality matte palettes! Xx
DeleteIf I ever decided to splurge on a Naked palette it would probably be the Naked 3, I love the shades in that. So cool about your points. I wanted to get a Beauty Rewards Card the other day, but they said they don`t make it anymore. I don`t know if that`s true or the lady couldn`t be bothered.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.beautynerd.co.uk
Ah no way! I haven't heard that they discontinued it, I hope they haven't and I hope you get one soon! Xx
DeleteSuch pretty colours, its a shame the quality varies from shade to shade x
ReplyDeleteA Blushing Beauty Blog x
It really is! Xx
DeleteAmazing colours love them, I need one of these. Thank you so much for sharing this with us.. :-) Have a lovely day! Visit me whenever you have time www.its-dominica.blogspot.co.uk kisses Dominica! xXx
ReplyDeleteCompletely agree, when I saw this on Instagram I was all over it, completely obsessed with the gorgeous rose gold packaging but once I saw it in store all that excitement completely evaporated. I really wish they had changed the shape of the actual shadows into squares instead of rectangles, I hate the huge gaps and the colours really didn't excite me. It just was a bit of a let down, plus for the first time ever when I swatched them they disappointed me. Not as pigmented or creamy as I have come to expect from UD. Awesome review, Danielle xxx

Thank you Kiran! They hype got me good, definitely better matte palettes about, Naked Basics 1 and 2 for a start! Xx
Deletei have never been a greatest fan of the naked palette like I am of others (i love zoeva!) but I like the small duo you have.

I generally love the Naked palettes! I will still get a lot of use from this but disappointed in the quality from shade to shade! Xx
DeleteTempted looks like my dream shade!! :D
ReplyDeletexx Sofia | SOFIAADOT
It's one of my favourites, a really nice base! Xx
DeleteOh wow that palette looks absolutely amazing! I actually didn't even know they came out with another NAKED basics palette!
ReplyDeleteRae | Love from Berlin
Haha I know another one! Xx
DeleteThat UD palette looks amazing! I need to look into getting that.
ReplyDeleteGeorgia | The Weekend Attic
I don't think the quality is as good as other UD palettes! Xx
DeleteI kind of wish they would release a full shimmer palette as I'm not really one for matte shades, the colour range is good though!
ReplyDeleteLauren Ashleigh xx
It is! It's just a pity the quality isn't the same for all shades! Xx
DeleteThis is so pretty palette! I love matte shadows and UD makes amazing eye shadows x
ReplyDeleteLaura
Pink Frenzy
They do but I don't think this is their best! Xx
DeleteAh I want this palette so much but I don't know if I could justify it haha. The shades are gorgeous though xx
ReplyDeleteI definitely don't think it's a necessity! Some of the shades are lovely! Xx
DeleteNot that I need anymore of these, but I do love the more muted colors in this palette. I love that they are less sparkly and just better base colors. I had seen a youtube blogger use the Pre-game shade and it looked amazing !
ReplyDeleteDenise | | Fashion Love Letters
I love a muted eyeshadow too! Some shades don't have the same quality as others though which is a bit disappointing! Xx
Delete:) xx
ReplyDeleteHaha I'm the same when releases happen that are limited edition and not easy to get hold of here! I literally feel like I have to purchase things, especially when I get a voucher/discount lol. I completely get what you mean with packaging though, that's important to me too. When I spend a lot on something, it has to feel luxurious for me. I have to say, I haven't tried a lot of products from Urban Decay. I think I'd have got this if it was all warm tones. Just because I don't create many cool toned looks at all. I definitely get what you mean about inconsistency with the pigmentation too. But I hope you're able to make them work for you.xx

I'm doing my best! I use way more cool tones so always look for those in a palette! Xx
